What is the Blue Riband?
The Blue Riband is an unofficial accolade given to the passenger liner that records the fastest transatlantic crossing. It symbolizes speed, national pride, and naval innovation.
History & Significance
Since the 19th century, the Blue Riband has represented excellence in maritime engineering. While no physical prize was originally awarded, it became a matter of intense rivalry among nations and shipbuilders.
Notable Record Holders
- SS Great Western – First steamship to cross in 1838
- RMS Mauretania – Held the title for over 20 years
- SS United States – Still holds the fastest crossing record from 1952
The Hales Trophy
Introduced in 1935 by Harold Hales, this trophy aimed to formalize the Blue Riband achievement. However, only some ships accepted the award due to disputes over commercial vs. non-commercial status.
